Former Nebraska defensive coordinator Mark Banker " a longtime friend, confidant and assistant to coach Mike Riley " learned over the phone he wouldn't be returning as a Husker coach.

In his first comments since Riley announced Banker's contract would not be renewed, Banker said he was "disappointed" Riley couldn't tell Banker " who'd known Riley for 20 years " in a face-to-face conversation.

Instead, Banker got a call Wednesday as he was headed to Tulsa to recruit. At the time, he was in the Denver airport, returning from Oregon, where he'd been visiting with family.

Banker said Riley told him "this is the hardest thing I've ever had to do," and then informed Banker his contract " which expired at the end of January " wouldn't be renewed. Riley didn't tell Banker why, and Banker didn't ask.

A call to Rileys cell phone " whose voicemail has been full for several days " and a text was not immediately answered.

The two haven't talked since. NU now plans to hire Bob Diaco as a replacement to Banker. Most of the Husker assistants have reached out to Banker.

"That's just disappointing, that it'd be a phone call and not face-to-face," Banker said. "That's a weird way to approach things. And you can say that it's hard, but if it's hard on him then it's hard on my end. But that's what you got to do, do it (face-to-face). Be grown men about it. It's a communication thing. Let's just be good communicators."

Banker said he took "full responsibility" for any struggles on the defense.
